Greater Springfield Habitat for Humanity (GSHFH) is proud to be one of 350 Habitat affiliates nationwide designated as a Veteran Build affiliate. This designation highlights our commitment to providing safe, decent, and affordable housing for veterans. Our work is centered around five core pillars: Building, Engagement, Education, Employment, and Honor.

Building GSHFH offers both homeownership opportunities and critical home repairs for local veterans in need. As a certified Veterans Affairs builder, we are able to act as the general contractor for veterans who have received Home Improvements/ Structural Alterations (HISA), Specially Adapted Housing (SAH), or Health Administration Service (HAS) grants from the US Department of Veterans Affairs. These grants help fund necessary home modifications so veterans can live more safely and independently. We also assist veterans with the application process and provide cost estimates for repairs. For the past three years, we have proudly participated in The Home Depot Foundation’s Repair Corps and have been recipients of funding from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development's Veterans Housing Rehabilitation and Modification Pilot Program (VHRMP). These funds directly support our repair services for veterans. We are currently accepting applications for veteran homeowners in need of repairs. To apply, visit habitatspringfield.org or call our office at (413) 739-5503 to request a mailed application.

Engagement Many veterans and their families feel a continued desire to serve, and we provide opportunities for them to do so. Whether it’s building homes, joining committees, or supporting community events, veterans can continue giving back through meaningful volunteer work.

Education We offer financial education and literacy programs tailored to veterans and military families. These resources help ensure long-term success in homeownership. Additionally, we train our staff and volunteers to better understand military culture, which enhances our ability to connect with and support veterans in our community.

Employment We recognize and value the unique skill sets that veterans bring. That’s why we actively recruit veterans to serve as employees, board members, National Service members, long-term volunteers, interns, and fellows at GSHFH.

Honor Throughout the year, we honor veterans by participating in and hosting special events that recognize their service. We also engage in advocacy and awareness campaigns, such as RED Fridays, where we wear red to "Remember Everyone Deployed." We regularly attend outreach events like the Veteran Stand Down, where we share information about our programs with veterans in need.
