Holiday Tradition

December 20, 2011 at 1:38 PM

For over 15 years the Eastfield Mall has generously donated space for our gift wrapping booths which traditionally have raised over $6,000 each year. All of the money raised goes directly to supporting our mission of building simple, decent and affordable homes in partnership with local families in need.

For the past few years that I have been working to organize the gift wrap, I have been blown away at the communities support of this annual fundraiser. Last year, volunteers contributed over 800 hours in wrapping gifts to help our organization. Families and friends have made this volunteer opportunity a yearly event and we truly appreciate the support!

As we enter the last few days of this years gift wrap, I thank everyone (past and present!) who have turned this event into a holiday tradition and an annual success.

It’s the last day of the build, people. And, you can’t even imagine what it feels like to stand on a lot looking at a home today when 5 days ago there was nothing.

Listen folks-this one I will try to keep short. We are THIS CLOSE to being done with the external part of the build of this duplex. So, I thought I’d talk with you a bit about the folks who are actually going to inhabit the dwelling.

I grew up in a situation where I was constantly working to fulfill the base level of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs: that meaning, I did not always have adequate access to food, clothing and shelter. And when your base needs aren’t met, it’s pretty hard to work on the fun stuff in life: education, spiritual pursuits, community and civic engagement, extracurricular activities and how you sort of fit into your little corner of the world—how you live and how you love.

It’s day two and the roof was raised! So, raise the roof: what is that? A passé urban phrase? A dance club move? Or the means to an end? Let’s take a look at some average costs of living in Springfield and then make a call.

Have you ever seen a house being built from the ground up? Have you ever seen two families cry in gratitude and joy at the thought that the one thing that has eluded them - the safety and security of a place to raise their families - finally begins to take shape?
