Greater Springfield Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit housing ministry. Founded in 1987 as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, Greater Springfield Habitat for Humanity believes that decent and affordable housing empowers people to reach their full potential. Habitat aims to promote family and neighborhood stability.

Greater Springfield Habitat for Humanity brings families who need decent housing together with people that can help. We are proud to have built affordable homes in partnership with families in our communities.

Habitat charges no interest and makes no profit.

What is Habitat for Humanity?


It is an international, nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. We build houses with low-income families who live in substandard housing. The families must complete 250-400 hours of “sweat equity” time and pay for closing costs.

Habitat builds simple, decent, affordable homes in partnership with homeowner families, caring individuals and companies and organizations who donate labor, money and materials. These homes are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with no-interest mortgage loans.

Where does the money come from to build homes?


We have to raise the money for each home that we build. Cash donations come from individuals, companies, foundations, organizations and grants. Gifts of land, materials and professional services are other ways to donate. Our affiliate tithes 10% of all unrestricted funds to Habitat Guatemala.

Volunteers from throughout our community donate their time and talent – faith communities, corporations, small businesses, school groups and individuals.

Do I need construction skills to volunteer?


No! Skilled crew leaders help you learn skills at the build site. We also need volunteers to work on our various teams such as Fund Raising, Media/Public Relations, Congregation Relations, Administration, Special Events, Volunteer and Family Selection/Family Support. Volunteer now!

How are partner families selected?


Partner families start the application process  by attending a general information session. Habitat chooses homeowners based on their level of need, their willingness to become partners, and their ability to repay the no-interest loan. We visit families as part of the selection process. We are an Equal Housing Opportunity organization.

What are the requirements to become a homeowner?
 
  • Minimum and maximum income levels varies by type of home and family size
  • You must be able to pay the approximately $1,600 in closing costs, make affordable monthly mortgage payments, and meet other household expenses.
  • You must be able to complete 250 – 400 hours of sweat equity/volunteer hours.
